Porthole:Liquid Gaze

Porthole originates from the lived experience of maritime travel between an island and the mainland. For island residents, the ocean is not merely a landscape but a fluid passage connecting home, distance, and the outside world. The ship’s porthole becomes a recurring interface through which this relationship is perceived. Based on original photography, the work combines artist-constrained AI-generated micro-motion with manual compositing to extend condensation, droplets, scratches, and surface traces into a slow temporal experience. For CDSA, the intimate porthole is translated into an urban-scale public interface. Through “subtractive immersion”—restricted framing, minimal motion, reduced information, and sustained duration—the work transforms the media screen from an attention-seeking surface into a temporary space for contemplation. The ocean thus moves from private island memory into collective urban perception.
